Muscat: Slated for a soft launch in the second half of 2025, this state-of-the-art facility has an estimated construction cost of over RO 18 million.

According to Dr. Hanan bint Salem Al Kindi, Director of the Public Health Laboratories Department at the Ministry of Health, the laboratory will unify all reference public health labs under one roof, significantly enhancing diagnostic capabilities and public health security. The facility, spanning over 18,000 square meters, will house cutting-edge technologies in virus and bacterial testing, toxicology, genetics, and more.

The lab’s three-floor structure will include advanced biosafety level 3 labs to handle high-risk microbes and level 2 facilities for virus and bacteria testing, newborn screenings, and chemical analyses. Dr. Hanan emphasized the lab’s role as a major regional hub for public health, research, and international collaboration, ensuring Oman’s position on the global health stage.

Engineers and health experts from Oman have worked closely with the Centers for Disease Control in the U.S. to integrate the latest innovations in lab construction, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Once operational, the lab will boost healthcare capabilities locally and serve as a regional leader in disease surveillance and scientific research.

As the project advances, the Ministry of Health is focusing on training national talent to manage and operate the lab, ensuring Omani specialists are well-prepared to handle the latest technologies.
