MUSCAT: Oman will introduce a new excise tax targeting sweetened beverages beginning October 2020.
According to a decision issued by His Excellency Sultan Al Habsi, Chairman of Tax Authority, sugar sweetened beverage products containing added sugar or sweeteners that are ready-to-drink, concentrates, gels, powders, extracts, or any form that can be converted into sugar sweetened beverage, will be subject to a 50 percent excise tax from October 1, 2020.
What products are included in the tax?
Products that are classified as sweetened beverages are subjected to tax including fruit drinks, sports drinks, coffee drinks, tea prepared and canned.

List of products excluded from the tax:
Fresh fruit juices (100% natural fruits), milk and their products that contain a ratio of not less than 75% of milk and laban.
It is worth noting that Oman levied a 100 per cent tax on tobacco, alcohol, pork meat and energy drinks from June 15 last year. A 50 per cent tax on carbonated drinks was also introduced.
