How to prevent DVT on long-haul flights? Oman’s health ministry explains

The Ministry of Health has issued an advisory to explain the risk factors and underscore the protective measures to avoid Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) during long-haul flights

Muscat – The advisory explains DVT as the occurrence of a blood clot in the deep veins, such as the leg veins or the lung, which is more likely to occur during flights that extend to four hours or more.
The ministry lists the following as risk factors:
• Duration of travel (4 hours or more)
• Previous history of venous thrombosis
• Pregnancy and childbirth
• Genetic tendency to clot
• Age
• Obesity
The ministry advises consultation with a doctor in you suffer from the mentioned risk factors.
Protective measures:
• Move every hour
• Drink plenty of water and fluids
• Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
