MUSCAT: Authorities are clamping down on fake news, and reminding citizens and residents that spreading rumours on social media about coronavirus is a serious offence that will be severely penalised.
“Anyone who creates fake news, spreading rumours and disseminating online is a crime punishable up to three years of imprisonment,” a statement from Government Communication Centre (GC) said.
According to His Excellency Dr. Abdullah bin Nasser Al Harrasi, Chairman of Public Authority for Radio and Television and Member of Supreme Committee, said that the spread of rumours decreased significantly in April compared to March, thanks to the government’s warnings against propagating misinformation. “Rumours are now occurring less due to the constant reminders by the relevant authorities and the legal issues involved,” he said.

“Spreading rumours will only bring fear and panic among members of the society whether citizens or residents especially in a time like this. People should take information from verified sources,” Al Harrasi added.
