MUSCAT: If you read something online or receive some information which you think is false, don’t post it on social media or pass it on to your friends over phone. Otherwise, you run the risk of paying a heavy price including a three-year jail term.
The Government Communication (GC) reiterated on Thursday a warning against sharing fake information in social media, citing that the act is punishable by law. “Sending or re-sending a false news or rumours that would affect public order through various technical means is an offence punishable by imprisonment for a period of three years,” GC said.
The reminder comes after multiple false claims on social media created confusion and fear among people on the current novel coronavirus (Covid-19) situation.
