Muscat – The fifth session of the Government Forum to Combat Trafficking in Persons in the Middle East commenced in Muscat, aiming to foster a unified vision to combat this global issue in a manner aligned with evolving criminal developments and methodologies. The forum seeks to enhance sustainability and effectiveness in the fight against human trafficking.

H.E. Sheikh Khalifa Al Harthy, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Diplomatic Affairs and Chairman of the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking, addressed the gathering, emphasizing Oman’s commitment to protecting workers from exploitation and human trafficking. He highlighted significant measures undertaken by Oman, including the enactment of the new labour law under Royal Decree No. 53/2023. The new law includes provisions explicitly prohibiting coerced labor and associated exploitative practices.

In his remarks, His Excellency underscored the universal nature of human rights conventions, stressing the importance of their equitable implementation. He lamented the current disparity between principles and actions, citing the plight of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip under the Israeli occupation authority. His Excellency condemned the atrocities of killings, starvation, and displacement faced by Palestinians, highlighting a blatant double standard and a disconnect in principles and positions.
