MUSCAT: Oman’s expat population continue to drop, as the country step up its Omanisation plans, which includes an expat visa ban.
Expats in Oman now make up 42.5 percent (1,987,456) of the country’s total population marking the lowest percentage since November 2018, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information.
In November 2018, the number stood at 1,996,190. Omanis, meanwhile, stood at 2,686,797, constituting 57.50 percent of the total population of the Sultanate, which stood at 4,674,253.

Indians largest expat community
Meanwhile, Indians continue to be the largest expat workforce in Oman despite dropping to 624,056 in October this year, compared to 660, 376 in December 2018. Bangladesh nationals comes second with 638,059 in October this year from 658,222 in December 2018.
The number of Pakistani expatriate workers also dropped to 209,248 in October this year from 217,602 in December 2018.
The decrease comes as Oman continues its efforts to nationalize its workforce, hiring more Omanis in both private and public sector jobs than foreign nationals.
