MUSCAT: The case was highlighted by Dr. Zaher Al Kharusi, Family Medicine Consultant, during a talk show in a local news channel.

Speaking to Al Wisal FM, the doctor explained that the teenager suffered from rib fractures after abruptly waking from sleep. Medical analysis revealed that he was consuming 12 cans of soft drink daily.

Dr. Kharusi blamed the root cause on a dangerous substance called EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) that was found in the popular soft drink.

EDTA is typically used to eradicate salt deposits in boilers; it poses severe health risks when ingested, particularly in excessive amounts.

Shedding light on the potential dangers posed by seemingly harmless beverages, he pointed out the substance’s ability to deplete calcium from the blood leading to debilitating conditions such as osteoporosis.

Dr. Al Kharusi advocates awareness surrounding the risks associated with soft drink consumption, emphasizing the importance of moderation and informed choices in maintaining overall health and well-being.
