Muscat – The decision comes following a positive evaluation of the award’s impact and effectiveness.

The renewal was announced during the participation of the permanent delegation of the Sultanate of Oman to UNESCO at the 219th session of the Executive Council of UNESCO, currently convened at the organization’s headquarters in Paris until March 27th.
The external evaluation report emphasized the alignment of the award with UNESCO’s tasks and competencies, citing its contribution to UNESCO’s medium-term strategy (2022-2029). Particularly, it supports the organization’s second strategic goal of “striving to build sustainable societies and protect the environment by promoting science, technology, innovation, and natural heritage.”
Recognizing outstanding achievements in environmental conservation, the award is consistent with the programs and priorities of UNESCO’s science sector and the objectives of the UNESCO Program on Man and the Biosphere.
The report also underscored the award’s alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, particularly focusing on environmental sustainability and biodiversity. It complements goals such as addressing climate change (Goal 13), preserving life under water (Goal 14), and safeguarding life on land (Goal 15).
Furthermore, the award’s consistency with international treaties related to climate change and environmental protection, notably the Paris Agreement, reinforces its global significance and relevance.
