Muscat: The bodies of six Asian expatriates were recovered at a construction site of a major water pipeline extension project in Airport heights in Seeb on Monday.

In a statement issued online, the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulances (PACDA) said after nearly 12-hours of rescue operations, the bodies of six workers trapped inside a concrete tunnel were recovered.

The workers were trapped inside following heavy rains on Sunday.  “It turned out that workers were found to be surrounded by rainwater and mud while conducting piping works. The rescue team used large-scale pumps to pump water into the 295-meter-long concrete pipe 14 meters below the surface. After painstaking efforts for about 12 hours, they were pulled from the inside of the pipe and they were dead,” PACDA said in a statement.

PACDA urged companies operating in such projects to comply with safety rules and protect workers from any risks.
