Our thoughts shape the stories we tell. Think about times when you believed your skills were unchangeable. Faced with new challenges, there might have been a fear of stumbling, a voice whispering, “Maybe this is as far as you can go.” This is the fixed mindset, convincing you that your abilities are set in stone, urging you to stay in your comfort zone.

Now, envision a different story. Picture yourself embracing challenges, seeing them as opportunities for learning and growth. Imagine facing the unknown with the belief that you can evolve and adapt. This is the essence of a growth mindset—a mindset that believes in your capacity to evolve through effort and learning, encouraging you to step out of your comfort zone and embark on the journey of becoming.

According to psychologist Carol Dweck, a growth mindset is the belief that you can grow your brain, and your intelligence can grow with effort. “The growth mindset allows people to value what they’re doing regardless of the outcome.” On the other hand, a fixed mindset is the belief that you are born a certain way and cannot change.

Simple Actions for Growth:

  • The Power of Yet: Transform your fixed mindset statements with a simple addition: “I can’t do this YET!”
  • Say Stop: When the fixed mindset voice becomes too much, take a pause, and clear your mind before continuing.
  • You Instead of I: Lift your spirits by using “YOU” instead of “I.” For example, “YOU got this!”
  • Seek Help: Don’t hesitate to ask for help when you’re struggling. It’s a sign of strength.
  • Build a Support Group: Work together with peers using different strategies. Learning and work becomes more enjoyable and effective.
  • Learn from Mistakes: Review your mistakes, understanding what went wrong to avoid making the same mistake in the future.

The Language Shift: Let’s consider how the words we use can alter our perception.

  • Embracing Challenges:
    • Fixed Mindset: “I can’t believe they assigned me this project. It’s way too complicated. I’m not good at these things.”
    • Growth Mindset: “It might be challenging but think about it as an opportunity to learn and grow.”
  • Learning from Setbacks:
    • Fixed Mindset: “I can’t believe they criticized my presentation. I thought I did everything perfectly. I must not be cut out for this.”
    • Growth Mindset: ” Let me go through the feedback and, see what I can learn, and use it to improve next time.”
  • Seeking Feedback:
    • Fixed Mindset: “I don’t want to hear what they have to say. I did my best, and that’s it.”
    • Growth Mindset: “I’m curious about what others think. Their feedback can help me see things from a different perspective and improve.”
  • Practicing Self-Compassion:
    • Fixed Mindset: “I messed up again. I’m not good at this, and I never will be.”
    • Growth Mindset: “Everyone makes mistakes. Let’s be kind to ourselves and use this as an opportunity to learn and grow.”
  • Celebrating Successes:
    • Fixed Mindset: “Why should we celebrate? We’re just doing our jobs.”
    • Growth Mindset: “Let’s celebrate our achievements, big or small. Recognizing our efforts keeps us motivated for more.”

Embracing these simple actions and adjusting our language can pave the way for a positive mindset shift, fostering a journey of growth, resilience, and improvement.
