MUSCAT : India was the leading destination for Omani patients sent abroad for treatment at the expense of the Ministry of Health in 2025, accounting for 19.6 percent of cases, according to ministry statistics released in September 2026.

Around 1,900 Omani patients were referred overseas for medical treatment during 2025, with 21 percent of those cases funded by the Ministry of Health.

India accounted for the largest share of ministry-funded overseas treatment at 19.6 percent, followed by Turkey with 14 percent, according to the data.

The referrals covered a range of medical conditions, with eye-related illnesses making up the largest proportion. The statistics recorded 78 patients referred for eye diseases, while 12 were sent abroad for cancer treatment, eight for heart-related conditions and 11 for kidney and urinary tract diseases.

Other cases included 13 patients with bone-related conditions, six requiring liver transplants and four undergoing plastic surgery. A further 266 patients were grouped under other medical conditions.

Among patients whose overseas treatment was funded by the Ministry of Health, 80 percent received treatment for eye conditions, while 14.6 percent underwent surgery for epilepsy, according to the ministry’s statistics.
