MUSCAT : The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has denied the authenticity of a social media post circulating in Oman that claimed a new traffic control system had been activated at all traffic-light radars from September 10.

In a statement, the ROP said it had monitored the circulation of the post on social media and confirmed that the information contained in it had not been issued by the police.

The ROP said the new traffic control system remains in a trial phase as work related to its implementation has yet to be completed.

According to the police, the system is intended to promote compliance with road safety regulations and curb unsafe behaviour by motorists.

The fabricated post had claimed that motorists would be monitored for offences including failing to wear a seat belt and using a mobile phone while stopped at traffic signals.

The ROP urged the public to obtain information from official sources and avoid relying on unverified posts circulating on social media.
