NEW YORK : Oman’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Omar bin Said Al Kathiri, attended the ceremony and expressed the Sultanate’s appreciation to Nepal for organising the humanitarian event, saying it reflected the values of friendship, solidarity and mutual respect among nations.

Ambassador Al Kathiri also thanked Pakistan for its cooperation and praised the efforts of Pakistani authorities and search-and-rescue teams in recovering and transporting the victims under extremely challenging conditions.

Paying tribute to Nadhira Al Harthy, the ambassador described her as a symbol of determination, ambition and courage.

Al Harthy made history in 2019 when she became the first Omani woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest. She later became the first Arab woman to climb Ama Dablam in Nepal, in addition to conquering several other major peaks during her mountaineering career.

Beyond her achievements in the mountains, Al Harthy played an active role in strengthening ties between Oman and Nepal through her leadership of the Omani-Nepalese Friendship Association. She also served as a Goodwill Ambassador for the Muscat Free Walking Team.

Ambassador Al Kathiri also remembered the other climbers who lost their lives, noting that their shared passion for mountaineering represented values of trust, cooperation and mutual respect among people from different countries.

He extended Oman’s condolences to the families and loved ones of all those who died.
