MUSCAT – The university said fraudulent emails are being circulated under false claims that recipients must pay tuition fees, update personal details or verify their university accounts through fake websites.
The phishing messages are designed to obtain usernames, passwords and sensitive information by directing users to unauthorised links and websites, the university warned.
As part of its security advisory, the University of Buraimi urged students and staff not to click on links or open attachments in suspicious or unexpected emails. It also stressed the importance of activating multi-factor authentication for all university email accounts.
Users were advised to avoid entering university usernames, passwords or any personal and financial details on websites accessed through email links unless the authenticity of the website has been verified.
The university also recommended checking the sender’s email address carefully before responding to any message and warned against responding to requests for tuition payments, account verification or personal information unless they come through official university communication channels.
Suspicious emails should be reported immediately to the IT Department and should not be forwarded to others, the university said.
For individuals who have already clicked on a suspicious link or shared login credentials, the university advised changing their account password immediately, contacting the IT Department and reporting the incident with relevant details to support further investigation.
