MUSCAT: The facility, launched through the Department of Medicine and Sports Sciences, aims to enhance healthcare services in the sports sector by providing comprehensive medical assessments, strengthening preventive care and promoting health and safety among athletes.
Following the completion of its preparation and equipment phases, the laboratory will provide medical and laboratory testing services based on integrated scientific procedures to assess players’ health conditions before participation in training programmes and competitions.
The facility will support early detection of health issues, help reduce sports-related injury risks and complications, and improve medical follow-up for athletes.
The laboratory serves as a national platform for specialised sports medical examinations, beginning with elite and promising players before expanding its services to athletes registered with sports federations and committees across various disciplines.
The medical assessment process includes reviewing the athlete’s medical history, recording vital indicators such as blood pressure, heart rate, height, weight and body mass index, followed by clinical examinations, electrocardiograms (ECG) and comprehensive laboratory tests to evaluate overall health and medical fitness.
The facility will also rely on the expertise of supporting medical teams, with nurses responsible for receiving athletes, documenting medical information and conducting initial measurements, while laboratory technicians will collect samples and perform tests according to approved professional standards.
The launch of the laboratory represents a significant step in developing sports medicine services by providing an integrated medical examination system in one location, improving efficiency, saving time and supporting higher standards of healthcare for athletes in line with international sports medicine practices.
