MUSCAT: The proposal, which has received regional backing, would ensure that Iran does not have sole control over the Strait of Hormuz, stated the source.

The Omani initiative is modelled on the Strait of Malacca, where vessels using the shipping route voluntarily contribute towards navigation services, environmental protection measures and search-and-rescue operations.

The proposal comes amid efforts to ease tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route that carried about one-fifth of the world’s energy supplies before the recent conflict.
The United States recently suspended a campaign of air strikes against Iran, raising hopes for a diplomatic path that could allow shipping operations through the strait to resume.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi discussed the situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz with his Omani and Saudi counterparts on Monday. According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Araqchi stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation and advancing joint diplomatic efforts to restore stability in the region and address security concerns affecting the waterway.

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that Washington was engaged in “good talks” with Iran and that a deal remained possible, while warning that US strikes could resume if negotiations failed to achieve results.
