Washington: In a social media post, Trump stressed that the agreement would be limited exclusively to peaceful, non-military purposes and would not permit the enrichment of nuclear material.

“The Civil Nuclear Deal, there will be no enrichment of material, being made between the United States Department of Energy and Saudi Arabia… will be approved, but is totally subject to Saudi Arabia joining the very respected and successful Abraham Accords,” Trump said.

The proposed agreement would support Saudi Arabia’s plans to develop civilian nuclear energy with US technology and assistance. Trump compared the arrangement to peaceful nuclear cooperation programmes involving countries such as the UAE.

The condition places the nuclear agreement at the centre of Washington’s broader diplomatic push to expand the Abraham Accords, which established formal relations between Israel and several Arab countries.
