MUSCAT – According to the society, the astronomical phenomenon occurs only twice each year, when the sun is positioned directly overhead the Kaaba in Makkah. During this brief alignment, the shadow cast by a vertical object points in the exact opposite direction of the Qibla, enabling people to determine the correct prayer direction with high accuracy.
The alignment will take place at 1:26 pm Oman time on Wednesday, 30 Muharram 1448 AH (July 15, 2026).
To determine the Qibla, the society advised placing a straight stick or any upright object vertically on a flat surface at the exact time of the alignment. The shadow cast by the object will indicate the direction opposite to the Kaaba, allowing users to identify the Qibla precisely.
The Oman Society for Astronomy and Space encouraged the public to make use of the event and share their experiences in determining the Qibla direction from their respective locations.
