MUSCAT – In a public awareness message, the municipality stressed that “every safety measure taken today can help prevent an accident tomorrow,” calling on those involved in construction and infrastructure projects to adhere to approved safety guidelines and contribute to creating a safer working environment.
Before excavation begins, the municipality advised contractors to inspect worksites thoroughly and identify underground utility networks, including electricity and water lines, to minimise the risk of accidental damage and ensure worker safety.
During excavation, it instructed that excavated materials and equipment should be kept at least 1.5 metres away from the edge of the pit to reduce the risk of collapse. Safety barriers and warning signs should also be installed around excavation sites to protect pedestrians and other road users.
For workers operating inside excavation pits, the municipality emphasised the importance of providing easily accessible ladders for emergency exits and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment, including safety helmets, safety boots and high-visibility vests.
During backfilling operations, Muscat Municipality advised that soil should be placed in successive layers, with each layer compacted thoroughly to prevent future ground settlement and ensure long-term stability.
