Paris: Eleven people lost their lives after a civilian aircraft carrying skydivers crashed in the town of Tomblaine, near Nancy in France’s Meurthe-et-Moselle department, on Sunday.

According to local authorities, the victims included the pilot and 10 skydivers. French media reports identified those on board as five instructors, five students and the pilot.

The aircraft came down on a grassy area beside a road, close to residential houses, at around 11am local time. A witness told French daily L’Est Républicain that the plane suddenly dived before crashing.

Emergency services, including police and the emergency medical service (SAMU), rushed to the scene, while representatives from the prosecutor’s office began assessing the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Police have cordoned off the area around Salvador Allende Street near the airport and urged the public to avoid the site to allow emergency responders and investigators unhindered access.

The cause of the crash has not yet been determined, and French authorities are expected to provide further details as the investigation progresses.
