MUSCAT – The authority said bright lights at night may alter the natural path of newly hatched turtles, causing them to move away from the sea, or may discourage female turtles from coming ashore to nest.
It added that reducing or switching off strong lights near nesting beaches plays a crucial role in protecting sea turtles and preserving the ecological balance of Oman’s coastal environment.
According to the authority, excessive lighting near beaches can disorient hatchlings, increase their exposure to predators, and significantly reduce their chances of survival. It also interferes with nesting activity, as female turtles may abandon nesting sites due to disturbance.
