Muscat: Expressing gratitude in a post on X, Tharoor praised the Omani government and people for their swift and courageous response after the commercial tanker MT Settebello came under attack in the Gulf of Oman.

Calling the rescue operation a testament to the strong ties between the two nations, Tharoor said Oman’s prompt intervention once again demonstrated the deep friendship shared by India and Oman. He also conveyed condolences over the deaths of three Indian nationals who lost their lives in the incident.

“An inadvertent omission: Deeply grateful to the Government & people of the Sultanate of Oman for their swift & courageous rescue of 21 Indian seafarers from the attacked vessel MT Settebello in the Gulf of Oman. Oman’s prompt action once again reflects the strong bonds of friendship between our nations,” Tharoor wrote, tagging Oman’s Foreign Minister H.E. Sayyid Badr Albusaidi.

The vessel, carrying 24 Indian crew members, reportedly came under fire on Wednesday after U.S. forces accused it of violating an ongoing naval blockade on Iranian ports. While 21 crew members were successfully rescued by Omani authorities, three sailors were later confirmed dead.

The incident has since sparked a diplomatic controversy. The Embassy of Iran in India rejected allegations made by U.S. President Donald Trump that Iran was responsible for attacks on vessels carrying Indian seafarers near the Strait of Hormuz.
