Brussels: The new funding package includes €5 million worth of testing equipment to enhance detection and monitoring efforts, along with a further €5 million contribution to the World Health Organization (WHO) to support surveillance activities, supply operations, and the provision of essential protective equipment for healthcare workers.

In addition, €6.5 million will be directed to an initiative led by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) to help equip and support frontline responders working in affected areas.

The announcement was made by EU Crisis Management Commissioner Haja Habib following a visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo, where she met with healthcare workers involved in the outbreak response.

“It’s about more than just containing the virus, it’s about proving that when lives are at stake, the world can still come together and act,” Habib said.

She emphasized the importance of global cooperation in addressing health emergencies, noting that infectious diseases can quickly cross borders.

“Health security is a shared responsibility, as viruses do not stop at borders and do not care about politics,” she added.
