MUSCAT : The Ministry of Energy and Minerals confirmed that the sector remains in the research and preliminary evaluation phase, with no commercial production activities currently underway.

The Ministry highlighted that Oman possesses unique geological characteristics, particularly the Omani ophiolite formations, including the Samail ophiolite, one of the largest and most significant geological formations of its kind in the world. These formations have drawn scientific interest due to their potential role in the generation of natural hydrogen.

Geological hydrogen, often referred to as natural hydrogen, has emerged as a promising area of research globally as countries explore alternative and sustainable energy solutions. However, the Ministry stressed that all hydrogen-related activities in Oman are governed by clear regulatory and technical frameworks designed to ensure operational safety, data reliability, and the protection of national resources.

The Ministry clarified that natural hydrogen exploration in Oman has not progressed beyond the research and technical assessment stage. It confirmed that no operational or commercial licences have been issued to any company or entity for the production of natural hydrogen in the Sultanate.

According to the Ministry, several scientific questions surrounding the occurrence, formation, migration, and accumulation of natural hydrogen within geological formations remain under investigation worldwide. It noted that scientific models in this field continue to evolve, with varying methodologies, assumptions, and findings, which is typical for emerging exploration sectors.

The Ministry further emphasised that growing interest in geological hydrogen should not be interpreted as evidence of immediate investment or development opportunities. Before any decisions on commercial viability can be made, extensive data collection programmes, specialised geological and geochemical studies, and comprehensive technical analyses must be completed and evaluated according to established scientific standards.
