MUSCAT : According to statistical data issued by the Health Affairs Department as part of the transformation initiative, goats accounted for the largest share with 3,117 heads, representing about 60 per cent of the total, followed by cattle with 1,032, sheep with 970, and camels with 66.

Al Musannah topped the list with 2,430 slaughtered animals, followed by Barka with 997, Nakhl with 786, Al Awabi with 601, and Al Rustaq with 371 during the same period.

The figures reflect heightened activity at municipal slaughterhouses during the Eid Al Adha period, highlighting their role in ensuring that meat supplied to markets meets approved veterinary and health standards through pre- and post-slaughter inspections.

Health monitoring data showed only two cases of total condemnation, involving two Somali goats at the Al Musannah slaughterhouse due to acute jaundice infection. No other municipalities reported similar cases during the period.

Authorities also recorded 1,165 kilograms of partial condemnations of meat unfit for consumption, distributed across Al Musannah, Barka, Al Awabi, Al Rustaq and Nakhl.

The results reflect the efficiency of veterinary inspection teams and ongoing oversight by the governorate’s Health Affairs Department, which contributed to preventing unfit meat from reaching consumers and reinforcing food safety standards.

South Al Batinah authorities continue to implement monitoring and awareness programmes aimed at improving service quality in municipal slaughterhouses and ensuring compliance with approved health and veterinary regulations amid growing demand for meat products in the governorate.
