Oman’s artificial rainmaking network boosts rainfall by 13.6%

Oman’s artificial rainmaking programme has increased rainfall levels by 13.6 percent through a network of 14 ionisation-based stations deployed across the Sultanate, according to data released by the agriculture ministry.

MUSCAT : The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources pointed out that the rainmaking system relies on ionic technology that stimulates cloud development without the use of environmentally harmful chemicals, making it an eco-friendly approach to enhancing rainfall.

The 14 stations are strategically located across several regions, including Al Jabal Al Akhdar, Wadi Bani Awf, Wadi Al Jizzi, Liwa, Suhar, Al Khaboura and Jabal Hafeet, among others. The stations have an operational coverage of up to 75 kilometres northward and 30 kilometres southward.

According to the ministry, the technology works by releasing negative ions into the atmosphere, which rise and interact with moisture particles and water vapour. This process helps increase cloud density and promotes the formation of larger water droplets, ultimately enhancing the likelihood of rainfall.

The ministry pointed out that the system contributes to increasing rainfall opportunities naturally while also helping improve air quality and reduce dust levels. The ministry stressed that the technology does not adversely affect weather conditions and depends on moisture already present in the atmosphere.
