MUSCAT : The fishing port in the Wilayat of Quriyat in the Governorate of Muscat is witnessing the implementation of a package of development and investment projects aimed at strengthening infrastructure and improving services provided to fishermen and investors, contributing to the growth of the local economy and stimulating maritime-related commercial and tourism activity in Oman.
Project Manager Engineer Abdullah bin Khalfan Al Hinai said Quriyat fishing port is one of the oldest and most important ports in the Sultanate of Oman due to its strategic location and role in supporting maritime activities. He noted that ongoing development works are part of broader efforts to enhance the economic and developmental role of fishing ports across the country.
He told the Oman News Agency that the project “Adding a fixed pier to the breakwater at the fishing port in Quriyat” has reached 100 per cent completion at a cost exceeding OMR 2.9 million. The project includes the construction of a 185-metre fixed marine pier to support the docking of ships and fishing boats and improve handling and marine services at the port.
He added that the development also includes the creation of a 33,000-square-metre investment area dedicated to commercial and service activities linked to the fisheries sector, aimed at attracting investment and generating direct and indirect job opportunities for local communities.
The project further includes the establishment of a dedicated site for a marine crane used in the maintenance and repair of vessels, improving technical services for fishermen and reducing operational time and effort through an integrated service environment within the port.
Engineer Al Hinai said Quriyat port already hosts several fisheries-related investment projects, including a fish processing and packaging plant operated by Blue Waters Company, a fish farming site by Taj Al Bahr Company, workshops for boat and engine repair, fishing equipment shops, an ice factory, a fuel station, a fish market, seafood retail and grilling outlets, and a tuna storage warehouse.
He added that these facilities enhance value addition in the fisheries sector, strengthen supply chains and support logistics services linked to marine fishing operations.
According to him, the port recorded fish landings of around 7,849 tonnes in 2025, valued at more than OMR 8.6 million, reflecting its economic significance and role in supporting food security and commercial activity in Oman.
He stressed that the development of fishing ports extends beyond service improvements to include broader economic and social benefits, such as improving working conditions for fishermen, supporting local investments, creating jobs, strengthening coastal communities and promoting maritime tourism.
He added that these projects represent an important step in enhancing the sustainability of Oman’s fisheries sector and upgrading port infrastructure in line with national efforts to diversify income sources and strengthen the economy.
