MUSCAT — The occasion highlights the critical role of accurate measurement in daily life, scientific research, trade, industry, and policymaking, while emphasizing the importance of reliable data in ensuring transparency, fairness, service quality, and environmental protection.
According to Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, metrology activities are expected to contribute to GDP growth by 0.01 percent by 2030. The sector is also projected to account for 64.8 percent of revenues generated by standardisation activities, while creating specialised job opportunities in calibration, metrological verification, quality control, and research and development over the next five years.
Imad bin Khamis Al Shakili, Director General of the Directorate General of Standards and Metrology at the ministry, said World Metrology Day reflects the importance of measurement as a strategic tool supporting sustainable development and strengthening trust between institutions and society.
He said accurate measurement forms the basis for national and international policies aimed at ensuring transparency and fairness.
Al Shakili noted that Oman joined the Metre Convention in 2013, becoming part of the international measurement system and an active participant in the activities of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures.
He added that Oman has strengthened its national measurement and calibration infrastructure through the National Centre for Measurement and Calibration, which serves as the national reference body for accurate standards linked to international benchmarks.
He said the country has also developed legislation regulating legal measuring instruments, including scales, fuel pumps, water and electricity meters, and pre-packaged products, while participating in international and regional technical comparisons that reinforce Oman’s position within the global metrology system.
Faiza bint Hamad Al Musharfi, Director of the National Centre for Measurement and Calibration, pointed out that the centre continues to develop Oman’s national metrology infrastructure in line with international standards to support key economic and industrial sectors.
She said this year’s celebration highlights the role of accurate measurement in strengthening confidence in decision-making, ensuring product and service quality, and protecting consumers and the environment.
Al Musharfi added that Oman’s efforts to modernise legislation, monitor measurement instruments, and upgrade technical infrastructure contribute to enhancing market confidence, supporting innovation, and protecting consumers in line with Oman Vision 2040.
She described World Metrology Day as a global reminder of the importance of measurement in promoting transparency, scientific progress, and informed decision-making.
World Metrology Day is observed annually to commemorate the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875, which established the foundation for international cooperation in measurement and the International System of Units used worldwide today.
