NEW YORK – Oman’s participation carries added significance as it chairs the seventh session of the Conference on the Establishment of a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction in the Middle East, reflecting international confidence in the country’s role in advancing disarmament and strengthening regional and global security.
His Excellency Ambassador Omar bin Said Al Kathiri, Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations, delivered a statement on behalf of member states, stressing that establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East remains a strategic priority and an urgent necessity for regional stability. He described it as an existing international commitment requiring unified global efforts.
The statement highlighted mounting challenges facing the disarmament and non-proliferation regime, including the continued development of nuclear arsenals and escalating rhetoric surrounding their use. It warned of the implications for international peace and security and stressed the need to strengthen multilateral cooperation and achieve consensus outcomes that restore momentum to the treaty process.
As chair of the seventh session, Oman also underscored the importance of maintaining a comprehensive and non-selective approach to disarmament issues, urging all countries in the Middle East to engage constructively to build trust and support more stable regional security arrangements.
Through its participation, Oman reaffirmed its commitment to advancing international disarmament and non-proliferation efforts, promoting dialogue-based solutions, and contributing to a more secure and balanced global system.
