MUSCAT : Oman on Sunday reinforced its call for diplomacy and practical solutions to safeguard navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, as Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held separate talks with His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik and Foreign Minister His Excellency Sayyid Badr Al Busaidi in Muscat.

Sayyid Badr said after meeting Araghchi that both sides had held a “good discussion” on the Strait of Hormuz, stressing the shared responsibility of coastal states to ensure maritime security and address humanitarian concerns involving detained seafarers.

“As littoral states, we recognize our shared responsibility to the international community and the urgent humanitarian need to free the seafarers held for far too long,” he said in a post on X.

“Much diplomacy is required and practical solutions to ensure lasting freedom of navigation,” he added.

The talks come amid heightened regional tensions and continuing concerns over shipping security in the strategic waterway, a vital route for global oil and gas trade.

Earlier in the day, His Majesty Sultan Haitham received Araghchi at Al Baraka Palace, where discussions focused on regional developments, mediation efforts and ways to end ongoing conflicts through peaceful means, according to Oman News Agency (ONA).

During the meeting, His Majesty the Sultan stressed the importance of prioritising dialogue and diplomacy in addressing regional disputes, saying peaceful engagement would strengthen the foundations of peace, improve the chances of reaching sustainable political solutions and reduce the impact of crises on the peoples of the region.

He also reaffirmed Oman’s longstanding position that diplomacy remains the most effective path to preserving regional security and stability.

Araghchi, for his part, expressed Iran’s appreciation for Oman’s role under His Majesty Sultan Haitham’s leadership in supporting dialogue and promoting peace and stability, particularly amid current regional challenges.
