MUSCAT – Specialists at the authority’s centre in the Wilayat of Masirah, located in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate, recorded the observation during ongoing field surveys and environmental monitoring activities. The whales were spotted in an active feeding state within the area known as ‘Sector One’, underscoring its high biological value.

The Authority pointed out that monitoring forms part of its continued efforts to track endangered species and document their natural behaviour in Omani waters.

The northeastern waters of Masirah Island are considered environmentally significant due to their rich marine ecosystem. The area serves as an important feeding ground not only for whales but also for sea turtles, making it a key hotspot for marine biodiversity.

The site combines vital migration corridors with concentrated feeding activity, supported by abundant food sources in the open marine environment. This makes it an essential habitat for the survival of several marine species.

The latest sighting is expected to strengthen scientific data on marine life distribution and reinforce the strategic importance of the area as a major feeding ground for whales and turtles, supporting ongoing conservation and monitoring efforts.
