HAITI – Jean Henri Petit, head of Civil Protection for Haiti’s Nord Department, said the incident occurred at the entrance to the fortress, an early 19th-century landmark built shortly after Haiti’s independence. He noted that the site was crowded with students and visitors attending the yearly event.
The citadel, one of Haiti’s most prominent tourist attractions, is recognised as a World Heritage site by UNESCO.
Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé said in a statement that “many young people” were among those present during the celebrations, adding that the identities of the victims had not yet been confirmed.
