DHAKA : Approximately 250 people, including women and children, are feared missing after a boat transporting Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi nationals capsized in the Andaman Sea. The vessel reportedly set off from southern Bangladesh enroute to Malaysia when it sank.
The United Nations reported that the boat was overcrowded and faced strong winds and rough sea conditions, which caused the accident.
This tragedy underscores the persistent dangers faced by Rohingya refugees, many of whom embark on perilous sea journeys seeking better opportunities and safety. Only a few survivors have been rescued to date, while the fate of hundreds remains unknown. Authorities and international organisations have expressed concern over the escalating humanitarian crisis and urged for increased global support to tackle the underlying causes of displacement and to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
