MUSCAT : South Korea’s decision to dispatch a senior presidential envoy to Oman underscores growing concerns in Seoul over the safe transit of energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global oil flows.
The visit by Kang Hoon-sik, chief of staff to President Lee Jae Myung, comes as shipping disruptions linked to regional tensions threaten supplies to one of Asia’s most energy-dependent economies.
Oman, which sits at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz and has long maintained a neutral diplomatic posture, is increasingly seen as a key partner in ensuring the safe passage of vessels navigating the sensitive waterway.

South Korean officials say the envoy’s mission is focused on engaging governments, energy firms and shipping operators to secure uninterrupted cargo movement and stabilise supply chains for crude oil, naphtha and other essential goods.
The urgency is clear: around 61% of South Korea’s crude oil imports and 54% of its naphtha shipments pass through the strait, making any disruption a significant economic risk.
Compounding concerns, about 26 South Korean-flagged vessels are currently unable to transit the Gulf, according to Reuters, highlighting the operational challenges facing shipping firms.
Seoul is now exploring contingency routes and emergency measures, including redirecting vessels via the Red Sea and tapping into strategic reserves, but officials acknowledge that ensuring safe navigation through Hormuz remains critical.
