Oman braces for up to 100mm of rain as thunderstorms intensify

Oman is set to experience intensified thunderstorm activity with rainfall ranging between 30 and 100 mm, accompanied by hail and potential flooding in wadis, according to a meteorological update.

MUSCAT : Khalid bin Khalfan Al Jabri, a specialist at the Civil Aviation Authority, told the Oman News Agency that the weather system began developing gradually this morning across the governorates of Al Buraimi, Al Dhahirah, North and South Al Batinah, Al Dakhiliyah, and Al Wusta.

The conditions are expected to extend by evening to include governorates of Muscat, North Al Sharqiyah, South Al Sharqiyah, and Dhofar, bringing rainfall of moderate to heavy intensity, with expected accumulations ranging between 20 and 50 mm.

Al Jabri added that forecasts for tomorrow indicate further development of thunderclouds, with rainfall intensifying again across the governorates of Musandam, Al Dhahirah, North and South Al Batinah, Al Dakhiliyah, Muscat, and North Al Sharqiyah. Rainfall during this period could reach between 30 and 100 mm, with thunderstorms, possible hail, and increased risk of wadi flows and flash flooding.
