MUSCAT : Oman’s financial regulator has warned that insurance claims may be denied for vehicles damaged while deliberately crossing flooded wadis in violation of safety instructions, as unstable weather continues to impact parts of the country.
In a public advisory, the Financial Services Authority (FSA) said standard motor insurance policies — including comprehensive and third-party coverage — do provide protection against damages caused by natural disasters such as heavy rain, hailstorms and flooding.
However, the authority stressed that such coverage is conditional on policyholders adhering to safety guidelines issued by authorities, including avoiding risky behaviour such as attempting to cross flooded wadis.

“The intentional crossing of wadis and failure to follow official instructions may lead to the loss of compensation rights if damage occurs,” the FSA said.
The regulator added that insurance companies are not liable for damages resulting from deliberate actions by drivers, including entering wadi channels or leaving vehicles in flood-prone areas without taking necessary precautions.
The warning comes as Oman experiences heavy rainfall and overflowing wadis in several governorates, prompting repeated advisories from authorities urging residents to avoid low-lying areas and floodwaters.
Separately, the FSA noted that under Oman’s traffic law, motorists who intentionally cross wadis in a manner that endangers lives may face penalties, including imprisonment of up to three months, a fine of up to RO 500, or both.
