MUSCAT : The occasion highlights the enduring position of the Omani mother as a cornerstone of national progress and a key contributor to the goals of Oman Vision 2040. Backed by strong legislative frameworks and social support, Omani women continue to play an active role in building both families and the wider community.

Abrar bint Nasser Al-Hadhrami, member of the Omani Sociologists Association, noted that Omani mothers are recognised as essential partners in the country’s development journey. She emphasised that national policies have translated this recognition into tangible opportunities, empowering women educationally and professionally while enabling them to balance family responsibilities with careers across sectors such as healthcare, education, engineering and administration.

She added that Omani women have made remarkable strides, becoming pioneers in scientific and professional fields, while continuing to uphold their central role within the family. Their contributions, she said, reflect a balance between modern progress and the preservation of social values and traditions.

Al-Hadhrami also pointed to the state’s commitment to women’s wellbeing, including dedicated healthcare services through the Maternal and Child Health Department. Omani women, she said, are not only beneficiaries of these services but also active providers, serving as doctors, nurses and educators who contribute to society’s growth.

Women’s participation in public life has also expanded significantly, with the right to vote and stand for Shura Council elections granted since 2000. Their achievements are celebrated annually on Omani Women’s Day, observed on October 17.

From a religious perspective, Layla bint Sultan Al-Rabee’i highlighted the mother’s role as a “shaper of humanity,” stressing her influence in instilling faith, values and awareness in children. She noted that in today’s fast-changing world, mothers play a critical role in guiding children through technological and social challenges, balancing supervision with trust.

Amal bint Abdullah Al-Jami’i, an educational trainer, described the Omani mother as the foundation of character-building and national identity, instilling values of citizenship and loyalty in future generations. She stressed that whether working or managing a household, a mother’s educational role remains central to shaping a capable and conscious society.

Echoing this, Najia bint Salem Al-Qataiti, a school principal, said her role as a mother influences her leadership style, fostering a compassionate and supportive learning environment. She emphasised that working mothers are not only caregivers but also nation-builders, whose efforts contribute to long-term societal progress.

Legal frameworks in Oman further reinforce support for mothers. Lawyer Rima bint Essam Al-Rubaie highlighted provisions under the Basic Law of the State and the Labour Law that safeguard women’s rights, including protection from dismissal during pregnancy, regulated working conditions, and maternity leave of 98 days.

Additional provisions include paid breastfeeding hours, extended childcare leave, and financial compensation through the Social Protection Law, ensuring job security and equal opportunities for women in the workforce.
