MUSCAT : The statement was delivered by His Excellency Omar bin Saeed Al Kathiri, Oman’s Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations (UN), during the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women held at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The session focused on “Ensuring and promoting access to justice for all women and girls.”

His Excellency Al Kathiri emphasised that Oman has established firm foundations for women’s empowerment, positioning women as key partners in national development alongside men. He noted that the country continues to strengthen justice and gender equality in line with its regional and international commitments.

He stressed that access to justice for women and girls is not merely a policy goal, but a central component of Oman’s broader development strategy and its commitment to international conventions and the Sustainable Development Goals.

According to the statement, Oman’s Basic Law enshrines equality before the law, while national legislation has reinforced women’s rights across social and economic sectors. Measures include expanded social insurance coverage, equal access to education, and equal opportunities in electoral participation, both as candidates and voters.

His Excellency Al Kathiri highlighted that Omani women have made notable gains under national strategies, including increased representation within the judiciary, particularly in the Public Prosecution. Women have also strengthened their presence in financial and insurance sectors, information and communications technology, research and development, and leadership roles within civil society organizations.

He added that women now account for 49.9 percent of beneficiaries of social protection programmes, underscoring their role as active contributors to national development and reflecting the country’s commitment to equality and equal opportunity.

Concluding his remarks, His Excellency Al Kathiri noted that Oman has implemented comprehensive legislative and judicial systems to ensure access to justice for all, including women. These systems guarantee the right to litigation and protection, supported by advanced technical services designed to enhance efficiency, transparency, and the rule of law.
