Serious traffic accidents jump 13% in Oman in 2025 as compensation payouts near RO 80 million

Injury-related claims surge and total insurance payouts rise despite stable overall crash numbers.

MUSCAT : Insurance companies in Oman recorded about 75,300 traffic accidents in 2025, a marginal increase of 0.1% from 75,200 cases in 2024, preliminary data from the Financial Services Authority (FSA) showed.

Of the total accidents last year, 54,271 were classified as minor, accounting for 72.1%, while 20,993 were serious incidents, representing 27.9%. Serious accidents rose 13.2% compared with 2024, indicating a shift toward more severe cases despite the overall number of accidents remaining broadly stable.

Total traffic accident claims exceeded 77,000 in 2025, up 1% from 76,500 claims a year earlier.

Claims related to minor accidents fell by 4% to just over 54,000, compared with 56,200 in 2024. In contrast, claims for serious accidents involving only material damage increased by about 10% to around 11,000, from 9,900 a year earlier.

Claims for serious accidents involving injuries and medical expenses rose more sharply, reaching nearly 12,000 in 2025, up 17% from 10,000 in 2024. Fatality-related claims totalled 342, slightly higher than 333 the previous year, marking a 3% increase.

Total compensation paid and under settlement exceeded RO 79.8 million in 2025, compared with RO 78.7 million in 2024, an increase of 1.47%, according to the FSA data.

Compensation for minor accidents declined 9.1% to RO 34.04 million. Payments for serious accidents causing material damage reached RO 18.88 million.

Compensation for serious accidents involving injuries and medical expenses climbed 26.67% to more than 22.47 million rials, up from RO 17.7 million in 2024.

Compensation for fatalities fell 7.15% to RO 4.45 million, compared with RO 4.8 million the previous year.
