Cochin: The directive came during a hearing on a petition challenging the censor certification granted to the Hindi film.
Justice Bechu Kurian, while hearing the matter, observed that concerns raised by sections of people in Kerala regarding the film could not be brushed aside. The court indicated the need for a closer scrutiny of the film’s content before it reaches theatres. Following the court’s order, the makers announced that the teaser of the film would be taken down.
The petition was filed by Sreedev Namboodiri, a 26-year-old biologist from Kannur. In his plea, he argued that the film’s title and narrative unfairly portray Kerala and its residents. The petition contends that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) failed to adequately assess whether the film could impact public order, morality or national integrity, as mandated under the Cinematograph Act.

The plea further alleges that while the trailer suggests a storyline set largely outside Kerala, it continues to associate the subject with the state in a manner that could foster division and reinforce stereotypes.
The sequel has already triggered strong political reactions. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had earlier criticised the project, calling it an attempt to incite communal tension.
Responding to the criticism, the film’s director Kamakhya Narayan Singh defended the project, stating that it is based on documented incidents and seeks to highlight issues that, according to him, warrant attention. Producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah also maintained that the film does not target Kerala or its people, asserting that its intention is to narrate the stories of alleged victims.
The trailer, released on February 17, presents three parallel narratives involving young Hindu women from different states who are depicted as facing coercion and religious conversion after entering relationships with Muslim men. The film stars Ulka Gupta, Aditi Bhatia and Aishwarya Ojha in key roles.
The original The Kerala Story, directed by Sudipto Sen and released in 2023, had similarly sparked widespread debate before its release. Despite the controversy, it went on to win two National Awards for Best Director and Best Cinematography.
