WASHINGTON : Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has crossed the coveted $1 billion mark at the global box office just three weeks after its release, becoming the filmmaker’s first movie since The Dark Knight Rises in 2012 to achieve the milestone.
Starring Matt Damon as the legendary Greek king Odysseus, The Odyssey has generated approximately $429.65 million at the domestic box office and $578.8 million internationally, taking its worldwide total to around $1.008 billion.
The achievement puts Nolan within touching distance of another major record. The film is expected to soon surpass The Dark Knight Rises, which earned around $1.08 billion worldwide, to become the highest-grossing movie of his career. It has already moved into the territory occupied by Nolan’s hugely successful Dark Knight films.

The numbers are particularly significant given the film’s unusual blockbuster profile. Nearly three hours long and adapted from Homer’s ancient epic poem, the movie has nevertheless emerged as one of the biggest theatrical events of the year.
Premium-format screenings have been a major factor in its success. IMAX has played an especially important role, with the film enjoying record-breaking demand since its opening. Its global IMAX debut generated $52 million, the biggest opening ever for a Nolan film on the format, with audiences also showing strong demand for limited IMAX 70mm screenings.
And the film still has one of the world’s biggest cinema markets ahead of it.
The Odyssey is scheduled to open in China on August 14, with an extensive rollout across IMAX and conventional screens. Its billion-dollar milestone has therefore been achieved even before revenue from its full Chinese theatrical release is added.
Strong word-of-mouth and continued interest in premium large-format screenings are expected to keep the film performing through the remainder of the summer.
The Odyssey is now the fifth movie of 2026 to cross $1 billion worldwide, reflecting an exceptionally strong year for blockbuster cinema. The milestone also further strengthens Nolan’s position as one of the most commercially successful filmmakers working today.
