COLOMBO : Harry Brook struck a superb century under pressure as England edged Pakistan by two wickets in a thrilling Group 2 Super 8s contest of the T20 World Cup in Kandy on Tuesday, becoming the first side to secure a place in the semi-finals.

Chasing a competitive target of 165, England were rocked immediately when Phil Salt was dismissed off the very first ball of the innings. Pakistan’s pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi then ripped through the top order, removing captain Jos Buttler and Jacob Bethell to leave England in early trouble.

With wickets falling and the required rate climbing, Brook steadied the innings with a composed yet aggressive knock, counter-attacking Pakistan’s bowlers and rebuilding the chase. His century proved decisive as England kept their nerve in a tense finish to seal victory with two wickets in hand.

The result not only handed England a crucial win in the Super 8 stage but also confirmed their spot in the semi-finals, underlining their credentials as strong contenders for the title.
