Muscat – The DBBS and the Ministry of Health have issued guidance for safe blood donation during the blessed month of Ramadan, highlighting donor health and wellbeing. The guide provides information on eligibility, safety, and ways to avoid dehydration while contributing to this life-saving humanitarian effort.
Health authorities strongly advise postponing blood donation until after breaking the fast. Donating while fasting can increase the risk of dehydration, dizziness, low blood pressure, and general weakness.
Typically, an approximate 450 ml of blood is drawn in less than 15 minutes – a safe amount that the body replenishes within 24 hours while also stimulating blood circulation.
Blood donors must meet the following requirements:
• Age: 18–65 years
• Weight: At least 50 kg
• Normal blood pressure and haemoglobin levels
• No medical contraindications
For medically fit individuals, blood donation is completely safe. Rare complications may include mild dizziness or nausea, which resolve quickly.
Tips for Safe Donation
Before donating:
• Get adequate sleep
• Avoid heavy meals
• Drink plenty of fluids
After donating:
• Drink sufficient fluids
• Sit for 10–15 minutes to recover
The Department of Blood Bank Services stressed that the priority during Ramadan is the safety of donors, and the best time to donate is after Iftar.
