MUSCAT : Oman’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) will connect 50 government schools to high-speed satellite internet through Starlink, the low-Earth orbit broadband service operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, as part of efforts to enhance digital service quality, particularly in rural and remote areas of the Sultanate.
The announcement was made during the TRA’s annual media briefing, where the authority’s CEO Eng. Omar bin Hamdan Al Ismaili said the initiative aims to strengthen connectivity in underserved communities, ensuring students in rural regions have reliable access to online learning platforms, digital resources and government e-services.
Starlink, developed by U.S. billionaire Elon Musk under his aerospace company SpaceX, delivers broadband internet via a constellation of low-Earth orbit satellites designed to provide high-speed, low-latency connectivity in areas where traditional fibre or terrestrial networks are limited or costly to deploy.

The TRA chief said linking government schools to satellite-based internet aligns with Oman’s broader digital transformation strategy and supports efforts to bridge the digital divide between urban centres and rural communities.
The move forms part of Oman’s wider push under Vision 2040 to modernise public services, expand digital infrastructure and ensure inclusive access to technology across all governorates.
By leveraging satellite technology, officials expect improved service stability and faster internet speeds in targeted schools, helping raise the overall quality of digital education while extending reliable connectivity deeper into rural Oman.
