MUSCAT : Dr. Chona Thomas, a pioneering figure in the development of plastic and reconstructive surgery in Oman, passed away at his residence in Muscat on Sunday following age-related illness. He was 84.
Dr. Thomas was widely regarded as the father of plastic surgery in the Sultanate, having played a central role in establishing and expanding the specialty over several decades. He arrived in Oman in the early 1970s and went on to dedicate much of his professional life to the country’s healthcare system.
Over a distinguished career spanning more than 50 years, Dr. Thomas headed Oman’s plastic surgery services and helped train generations of surgeons, leaving a lasting imprint on the nation’s medical landscape. His work covered reconstructive, aesthetic and corrective procedures, earning him respect across the region.

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to healthcare and public service, Dr. Thomas was granted Omani citizenship and was honoured with the Order of Oman, the Sultanate’s highest civilian award, by the late His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said.
Dr. Thomas was also featured and honoured by The Arabian Stories as a TAS ICON, recognising his pioneering role and lifelong service to Oman.
Tributes from the medical community described him as a mentor, visionary and humanitarian whose legacy will endure well beyond his lifetime.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family.
