Muscat – Oman’s Public Prosecution warned on Monday that fraud cases continue to rise despite sustained public awareness campaigns, describing the crime as one rooted in deception and the sale of false promises.
Speaking at the Public Prosecution’s annual media briefing, Public Prosecutor His Excellency Nasser Al-Sawaei said fraud-related offences had increased by 26%, even as authorities intensified warnings to the public.
“We are still, to this day, chasing the sale of illusions, because the crime of fraud is deceiving a person with something that is not true,” Al-Sawaei said.

He said fraud crimes typically revolve around misleading victims with unrealistic financial gains, adding that perpetrators often exploit trust, lack of awareness and the promise of quick profits.
Al-Sawaei reiterated that combating fraud requires not only enforcement by authorities but also greater vigilance by individuals and families, urging the public to verify offers and report suspicious activity.
