MUSCAT : The Public Prosecution has warned that any act of violence, exploitation, abuse or degrading treatment that undermines the dignity, reputation or honour of persons with disabilities constitutes a criminal offence punishable by law.

In a public legal clarification, the prosecution said offenders may face imprisonment for up to two years, a fine of up to RO 3,000, or both, in accordance with Article 68, read together with Article 15 of the Law on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

The offence covers a wide range of abusive conduct, including physical or psychological harm, exploitation and any form of ill-treatment directed at individuals with disabilities, whether in private or public settings.

The Public Prosecution stressed that the legislation reflects Oman’s commitment to protecting vulnerable groups and safeguarding human dignity, calling on society to uphold respect, inclusion and equal treatment for persons with disabilities.

Authorities urged the public to report any violations, reiterating that preserving the rights of persons with disabilities is a legal and moral responsibility shared by all members of society.
