MUSCAT : Oman commended the positive spirit that prevailed throughout the talks, which culminated in an agreement facilitating a large-scale prisoner swap between Yemen’s internationally recognised government and the Iran-backed Houthi movement rebels.
Officials from both sides confirmed that the deal covers nearly 3,000 detainees in total, including seven Saudi nationals. The agreement is expected to ease humanitarian suffering and build momentum for further confidence-building measures between the warring parties.
Majed Fadhail, a member of the government delegation involved in the negotiations, said the two sides had reached consensus on a new exchange that would result in the release of “thousands” of war prisoners. He described the agreement as an important outcome of sustained dialogue hosted in Muscat.
