SYDNEY – A mass shooting in the Bondi Beach area of Sydney killed at least 12 people and wounded 29 others, including two police officers, on Sunday evening in what authorities described as a “terrorist incident,” police said.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said one man believed to be one of the shooters was killed at the scene, while a second alleged gunman was taken to hospital in critical condition. Police are also investigating whether a third offender may have been involved, he added.
The shooting occurred at about 6:47 p.m. local time (0747 GMT) near the Bondi Pavilion during a Hanukkah celebration attended by more than 1,000 people, Lanyon said. Those injured were taken to multiple hospitals across Sydney, with conditions ranging from serious to critical.

Lanyon said he had authorised special police powers under Sections Five and Six to expand the investigation and prevent any further violence. “This is a time of calm,” he told reporters, urging the public to avoid retaliation. “The police are investigating thoroughly. We have acted promptly, and we have taken decisive action. No stone will be left unturned.”
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns confirmed that at least 12 people had been killed, calling the incident a tragedy for the state. Authorities said security had been tightened across Sydney as investigations continued.
